On one hand the Rudd Government is pushing ahead with plans to build a National Broadband Network, offering all Australians download speeds of at least 12 Mbps. On the other hand, the same government is talking about introducing content filters which – according to the government’s own research – degraded network performance by between 20 and 75 per cent. Half the tested filters let more than five per cent of the blacklist sites through anyway, and all returned false positives.

Regardless of the technical problems, the government seems determined to push on in order to appease a few ring wing nutjobs – who are already talking about expanding the filtering to include other stuff they don’t like, such as online gambling and “illegal” sites. It’s a slippery slope once you let these people call the shots and if I was gay, Jewish or even just left-handed I’d be very concerned about now.
